Joseph Georges Sahiouni, 61, of Las Vegas, NV passed away suddenly on Sunday September 18, 2022 in his home. Joseph was born in Saida, Lebanon, the youngest son of Georges and Wadad Sahiouni. Joseph emigrated from Lebanon to the US in 1978 to attend college at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (Go Blue!). There he obtained a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering and would later go on to earn an Executive MBA from Michigan State University. Joseph went on to have a successful career where he assumed many leadership roles that provided him the opportunity to drive innovation and act as a mentor to his junior colleagues. Joseph was held in high esteem by his co-workers who regarded him as a man of integrity who conducted himself with honesty, intelligence and compassion.
Joseph was a dedicated engineer who was passionate about his work, however, what was most important to him was his family. While in undergrad at the University of Michigan Joseph met the love of his life, Emmy Ton Sahiouni. Joseph was smitten immediately; he and Emmy married in 1986 and welcomed the birth of their daughter Mai “Mijoe” Sahiouni two years later. Emmy and Joseph were joined in the states by Joseph's mother, Wadad, who helped raise Mijoe. As anyone who was fortunate enough to spend time with Joseph knows, Emmy, Mijoe, and Wadad were his pride and joy. Joseph credited the women in his life; his mother, sisters, wife and daughter for molding him into the man he was. He spoke of them and the lessons they taught him frequently and fondly. Joseph was a man who was by all accounts highly accomplished, but there was no achievement for which Joseph was more proud than to be Mijoe’s Pappy.
It is difficult to overstate what an immeasurable loss the world suffered when Joseph passed away. He was a man whose generosity of spirit, humor and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. Joseph was a man who brought people together, he turned strangers into friends and friends into family. Joseph was at heart an optimist who believed in the common humanity of all people above all else. He was a man who set an example for the rest of us, by opening his heart and his home to friends, family and strangers alike. Joseph had a thirst for life and believed in savoring all of the many wonderful things this world has to offer; he loved to dance, to meet new people, and to explore different cuisines. Joseph was a global citizen who traveled extensively for work and leisure. Throughout his life he called several places “home” including- Lebanon, Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska, Iowa, Texas and finally Nevada. Joseph was always quick with a joke and smile. He was an anchor, the patriarch of his family and a Sun in his own right. His light shone brightly on all those who were lucky enough to know him. His love generated its own gravity that held us all safely in his orbit. Without Joseph the universe is a little darker, a little colder, and a little more uncertain. Luckily for us, he left a gift; a piece of himself with everyone whose life he touched. And we are now tasked with the weighty duty to carry Joseph's light forth into the universe to propagate his spirit, his generosity and his love.
