Lawrence Walter Cox was born June 23, 1936 to Walter and Leonore Cox (Battenfeld). “Larry” or “Wally” as he preferred to be called, was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, where he stayed until joining the United States Air Force in 1954. Throughout his military career, Wally was stationed all over the world and had the opportunity to travel with his family. He served during the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Cold War. After 22 years of service, Wally retired as a Master Sergeant from Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas and went on to hold civilian jobs at Scenic Airlines, Kidd Marshmallow and Moen Faucets.
Throughout his life, Wally was involved in the Lutheran Church and was a founding member of Faith Community Lutheran Church in Las Vegas. He enjoyed being an elder, participating in Stephen’s Ministry, singing in the choir and being part of the communion team. Wally also enjoyed volunteering in his community both at Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Southern Hills Hospital and was a member of the American Legion. He also enjoyed tending to his garden and could make any plant bloom. He was a loyal Detroit sports fan and would often watch them play (and sometimes even win!).
Though Wally was well traveled and enjoyed staying busy with the church and community, his favorite activity of all was being with family. He met the love of his life, Flo, while stationed in England and they spent the past 64 years building a beautiful life together. Up until his passing, they took daily walks and he made her coffee and tea every day without fail. He was proud of his three daughters Sue, Linda and Lauri and two son-in-laws, Roger and Bob. Most of all, he enjoyed bragging about his two granddaughters, Chelsea and Emma and most recently spending time with the second love of his life, his great grandson, Noah. His family was by far his proudest accomplishment.
Larry went to be with His Lord and Savior on February 9, 2021 while surrounded by his family. He lived 84 beautiful years and was so happy with and proud of the life he lived. He is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Leonore Cox, sister Carol Suzanne “Tudy” Tigay and son Stephen Cox. He is survived by his wife, Florence Cox (Glendenning), his daughters Susan Garvin, Linda Rasch (Roger) and Lauri Lehman(Robert); granddaughters Chelsea Garvin and Emma Lehman; great-grandson Noah Garvin; siblings Lauri Like (John) and Jeffrey Cox (Marilyn); nephews, nieces, extended family and friends both in the United States and the UK.
Wally was witty, funny, sociable (could and would talk to anyone) and was one of the kindest souls to ever walk this Earth. Larry never met a person he could not befriend. He will be most remembered for his Faith, his kind soul, his quick wit, being a proud Veteran and his ever so corny “dad” jokes.
