Maria was born in The Bronx borough New York City, New York on August 30, 1945. Her father and mother were born and grew up in Italy and migrated to the United States in the late 1930s. Her mother was a seamstress and her father ran a restaurant and did small construction work for the business owners/tenants around their residence. She had three brothers and many cousins, aunts and uncles that were a big part of her childhood. From large family dinners, to going over for cookies after school to relatives homes to just spending time with each other sitting around the table playing cards. That family first mindset carried throughout Maria's life and she was happiest when surrounded by her grandchildren and her great grandchildren, who affectionately called her "Moppy".
When she was a teenager, her mother and father moved to Southern California where she went to Alhambra High School. It was in California that she met and married the love of her life, David Carney (affectionately called Boppy). Together, they had two children, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Moppy loved holidays, especially Christmas, where she went all out with decorations, presents and food. The most important thing to her was to make special and happy memories for the children.
Maria loved playing cards. Her favorite game was blackjack and, when she and David moved to Las Vegas in 1996, she made many friends while trying her luck at cards. When her extended family and friends came to town she loved taking them to the casino and showing them how to play blackjack "her way". Family gatherings were typically at Moppy and Boppy's house and she made everyone feel welcome.
Maria was strong, loyal and a fighter. She selflessly gave her love and time to her family while beating breast cancer twice, having both knees replaced, having hip arthritis and managing her diabetes. She loved shopping, cooking, making Christmas stockings for the family and being available to all her family and friends for advice and support. She was incredibly generous of her time and of herself and was known to be the type of person to give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. She was great with numbers and spent many years as an accountant for engineering companies while living in California.
She will be missed greatly by her husband of 55 years, David Carney, her daughter Dana Bollman, her grandchildren Chris Carney and his wife Angelina, Gena Yamashita, Corrin Carney, Matthew Carney and Meagan Faubion, by her great grandchildren Ayden, Ace, Alani, Lucas and Logan and by so many cousins, second cousins, aunts, uncles and friends she has made over the years.
A visitation for Maria will be held Friday, July 31, 2020 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Palm Cheyenne Mortuary, 7400 West Cheyenne Avenue, Las Vegas, Nevada 89129.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.palmcheyenne.com for the Carney family.
