
Melvin C. Hayley, 85, of Las Vegas, passed away on Jan.19, 2012, with his son, James Hayley, by his side. He was a 45 year resident of Las Vegas and a retired school teacher. Melvin was born on Jan. 14, 1927 in Sweetwater, TX, to William Curtis Hayley and Lelona Posey Hayley. As a young man, he was a drummer in a local band, a jitterbug champion and participated in numerous rodeos. He was a lifelong hunter and fisherman. He served in the US Army
as a Sgt. during WWII. After his service, Melvin obtained his college degree in Corpus Christi, TX. He taught school in Texas and Las Vegas. He moved to Las Vegas in 1967. He taught at CP Squires Elementary and Lomie Heard Elementary. Melvin loved teaching, his students and his co-workers. He retired after a long and wonderful career. He played many instruments and was especially fond of the ukulele.He volunteered his time to teach many students to play.He was recalled as being the life of the party, always ready with a joke or smile. He had many close friends whom he dearly loved and cared about, especially Dow Combs.Melvin was a beloved father and a caring grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.He is survived by his son, James Hayley. daughter in law Robyn Haley and his beloved grandchildren, a grandson, Devlin Hayley and two granddaughters, Angelina Hayley and Analyce Hayley all of North Las Vegas. He also leaves behind many beloved friends, neighbors and his dog, Lil General. Services will be private, cremation arrangements will be handled by Palm Mortuaries.
