With profound love, we announce the passing of Michael Richard Guerra, who entered eternal peace on March 7, 2026, at the age of 69, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Michael was born on February 20, 1957, to Manuel and Luella Guerra, and from the very beginning embodied strength, determination, and a deep love for family. He was a devoted son, a loving brother to Mona, and a man whose life was marked by integrity, service, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
A gifted and accomplished athlete, Mike excelled in every arena he stepped into. At Rancho High School, where he graduated in 1975, he was an exceptional all-around athlete, playing basketball and soccer, but most importantly lettering in baseball as a first baseman, and serving as both quarterback and punter on the football team. His athletic talent and competitive spirit were evident to all who knew him.
His love for baseball earned him a scholarship to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he continued to distinguish himself on the field and was selected as UNLV’s choice as an All-America candidate, a tremendous honor that reflected his outstanding talent at first base and dedication to the sport. During this time, one of life’s greatest blessings also found him – he met the love of his life, Jan.
In 1978, Mike’s athletic achievements led to him being drafted by the Seattle Mariners, where he proudly played minor league baseball. He later returned to UNLV and in the spring of 1980 he and Jan were married, building their foundation of a beautiful life together. A year later, Mike graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice, setting the course for a long and honorable career in public service.
Michael began his career with the Nevada Gaming Control Board in 1980, where he served with distinction for nearly 30 years. Through dedication, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to justice, he rose to become a Supervisor in the Enforcement Division before retiring. His excellence in law enforcement was further recognized when he was selected to attend the prestigious 167th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, graduating on December 13, 1991 — an honor that reflected both his professionalism and character.
Even after retirement, Mike’s commitment to service continued. In 2011, he joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Criminalistic Bureau as a part-time investigative aide, where he worked for over seven years, continuing to serve his community with the same dedication that defined his life.
Mike’s love for the game of baseball transitioned to providing his knowledge and leadership as a coach to not only his sons and nephew, but to countless players in the Las Vegas area. He enjoyed managing a scout team with his father Manny and with their many teams they helped showcase players to further their own passion in the pursuit of playing college and professional baseball.
He was also an avid outdoorsman whose happiest moments were found beneath open skies and surrounded by the people he loved most. He loved growing up hunting with his father, grandfather and friends and continuing the tradition with his own sons and nephew. Some of the fondest memories were the cherished times spent at R~Kamp in Swains Creek, Utah — camping, fishing, riding ATVs, and enjoying the laughter of family and friends gathered around the fire pit. Those moments of togetherness, storytelling, and joy will remain forever etched in our hearts.
His passion and love of fishing extended beyond his wildest dreams and blessed him with many dear friendships and memories. Mike was a seasoned angler and known for his immense experience on Lake Mead and with his knowledge and dedication it earned him a place on the pro-staff teams for Plano Tackle and Costa, a reflection of the respect he earned within the fishing community.
Mike was dedicated about creating opportunities for others to experience the same joy and peace he found in nature. He devoted time and energy to many clubs, organizations, and tournaments, always hoping to inspire others to enjoy the outdoors, build community, and create lasting memories with those they loved.
Mike was an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and uncle whose greatest lessons were not only spoken but lived through his example. He instilled in his children and grandchildren the values of integrity, hard work, resilience, loyalty, and love for family. Through every life lesson, every shared adventure, and every moment of encouragement, he helped shape the lives of those who loved him most. His wisdom, guidance, and steady presence will continue to live on through them.
Above all else, Michael’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife of almost 46 years, Jan; his children, Jason (Ellen), Christopher (Cassandra), and Jennifer (Michael); his treasured grandchildren, Mason, Colson, Ashlyn, Evan, and Noel; his sister Mona Beaman; and countless extended family members and dear friends whose lives were forever touched by his love, wisdom, humor, and strength.
Michael Richard Guerra leaves behind a legacy of love, honor, service, and devotion. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always loved.
