He was born in Sioux Falls, SD on August 23, 1954 and adopted out of Lutheran Social Services in Sioux Falls; he was loved and raised by the most special couple, Curtis and Iona Raines. Rick met his wife, Sue, while attending Pasadena City College, and the romance lasted 45 years. He completed his education at Cal State Los Angeles with a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration/accounting which served him well in his varied business endeavors.
He spent his early childhood years on a farm in South Dakota playing with his dog, feeding the chickens, helping with the hay threshing and playing with his cousins. The family moved to Altadena, CA when Rick was five and then to Pasadena, CA a short time later. They lived there throughout his school years eventually attending Pasadena City College where he met Sue. After they married in 1976, he worked in retail management, banking and home textiles, and he continued his education at Cal State Los Angeles while he and Sue started their family and became parents to 3 children. Rick, always the entrepreneur looking for business opportunities, decided to relocate the family to Las Vegas in 1990. He continued in retail management, started a resume creation service, and settled into real estate property management, opening an office in 1995 which is still going strong under a great team that he established.
His hobbies spanned a wide range of interests – Rick was uninhibited – open to trying all kinds of new things – karate (he was a Shotokan black belt), wood working, chess, ping pong, ballroom dancing, weight training, creating games and contests for the office, traveling and creating trip itineraries with new experiences.
Rick was an all-in kind of person – nothing was part way – he was fully committed to whatever he decided he was interested in – family, relationships, hobbies, career.
He was a man that was respected for his integrity. He was compassionate for those he could see a quality in that just needed a little nurturing. He especially had a heart for the widows and orphans of Liberia and supported that mission through the church.
He leaves behind four siblings – Kam, Kim, Keith, Robin, and three children and their spouses and 3 precious grandchildren; Kimberly (spouse Philup and son Landon), Derek, Corbin (spouse Angela and sons Connor and Ryan).
Rick’s ashes will be interred in Flandreau, SD at Bethania/Messiah Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Faith Community Lutheran Church directed to Dorcas Microloan Program for women in Liberia.
Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday March 12 and will be livestreamed at https://boxcast.tv/view/richard-raines---celebration-of-life-hus34tc9tbpsql0al1qo
