Richard A. Taylor died at his home in North Las Vegas, Nevada on January 3, 2021. He was born February 6, 1929 in Nutley, New Jersey. He attended elementary school in Nutley and graduated from Nutley High School. He continued his education and graduated from the Long Island Agricultural and
Technical Institute in Farmingdale, New York. His boyhood summers were spent at the New Jersey shore and he loved fishing, travel and fun with his siblings.
On June 29, 1952 he married Dorette Reeg at the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Paterson New Jersey. They began their lives together in New Jersey. Two children were born to them there, Kenneth and Suzanne. A few years later, the family moved to Upstate NY. The family soon grew with
the birth of Joanne.
In those early years Richard worked at a floral shop in Nutley New Jersey. In 1957, Richard began a new career in computer science at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY working as a system analyst. He would stay at Cornell for 30 years until his retirement in 1987.
Having been enriched by the cold winters of the east coast all of his life, one year after retirement from Cornell, Richard and Dorette moved to the warmth of Arizona. Wishing to be closer to their daughters, a move to Nevada followed in 2007.
Richard was a member of Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Las Vegas. Prior to that he was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ithaca, New York and Christ Greenfield Lutheran Church in Gilbert, Arizona. He had a passion for woodworking and often volunteered his talents for church projects.
Having developed a joy of traveling at an early age, Richard and Dorette traveled extensively in their fifth wheel camper during retirement. With a visit to Alaska in 2002, they were able to achieve their goal of visiting all 50 states. They also enjoyed a trip to Europe in 1984. In addition to traveling, he was never one to pass up an opportunity to toss a fishing line in the nearest water.
Richard is survived by Dorette, his wife of 68 years; son, Ken and wife Reba; daughter, Suzanne and husband Clarence “Doc” Whitescarver; and daughter; Joanne and husband Jim Stucky.
A celebration of the life of Richard Taylor will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 23rd at the Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Las Vegas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Richard’s honor to The Lamb Of God Lutheran School Endowment Fund.
