He excelled in school and has advanced degrees in mathematics from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and the University of Chicago. He served in the United States Army for some time; after which he transferred to the Army Reserve. He eventually relocated to Chicago, IL where he obtained a teaching position at Wendell Phillips H.S. It was there that he noticed another teacher, Naomi J. Baxter. He told his colleague Henry Springs, that when he saw her that she would eventually become his wife. That very statement became a reality for the couple on August 24, 1964.
Willie held several educational positions during his career. These include being a teacher, Assistant High School Principal, and coordinator for the mathematical curriculum for the City of Chicago’s Public Schools. He also wrote the mathematics section for the college entrance exams for several years. Willie was a self-made man who enjoyed his independence to the end. He had the ability to keep people laughing at all times.
Willie is survived by his daughter Alison (Scott) and his son Paul. He also leaves to cherish his grandson Tyler Johnston. Willie was proceeded in death by his beloved wife Naomi whom passed away in July of 2004. He was the last of his parents’ 9 children to survive (he was proceeded in death by 5 brothers and 3 sisters).
Willie's favorite foods include anything in the “dessert” food group (particularly Oreo cookies and Snickers bars). He was a fine wine connoisseur who also appreciated an iced cold bottle of Pepsi. He wasn’t a movie buff but his 2 favorites were Gone With the Wind and the Ten Commandments. He loved watching golf (particularly Tiger Woods) and news on MSNBC. His favorite sports teams included the Chicago Bears and Michigan Wolverines. His favorite sport was golf!
A visitation for Willie will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2019 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Palm South Jones Mortuary, 1600 South Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89146. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, October 9, 2019 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, 1600 South Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89146. A reception will occur Wednesday, October 9, 2019 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, 1600 South Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89146.
