

Hubert B. Martin Jr. of Gainesville, Ga, loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and patriot went home to be with the Lord on February 15, 2022. Born and raised in Florida, Hubert was a lifelong University of Florida Gator, graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1957. In college, he played football for the Gators and was a four-year letterman. He served as President of the “F” Club and was a member of Florida Blue Key Leadership Fraternity. After college he served his country in the Army and National Guard. During his 38 years working for Bell South Telecommunications Company and AT&T, he lived in Jacksonville, FL, Pompano Beach, FL, Gillette, NJ, Norcross, GA, Miami, FL and eventually retired in Birmingham, AL. His career included work as a district plant manager, staff manager, division network manager and he retired as an Assistant Vice President in Birmingham.
Hubert attended Miami Edison High School and shared 56 years of marriage with his high school sweetheart, Jeanette Cosper. They had three children, Hubert B. Martin, III (Wooster, Ohio), Karen M. Foster (Plano, Texas) and Dr. Wayne T. Martin (Gulf Shores, Alabama). He taught his children by his example to work hard, follow the Golden Rule and Love God and church above all others.
Over his lifetime, Hubert was a member of and led many organizations such as The Civitan Club, Kiwanis Club President, Toastmasters International, Gideons in Birmingham and in his last few years he was a Stevens Minister at Lanier Village Estates. He also had several memberships and leadership positions in both the Methodist and Presbyterian Church including becoming an Elder and serving on the Finance Committee at First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville, GA.
Mr. Martin is survived by his children, Hugh Martin (Lisa), Karen Foster (Marty), Wayne Martin ( Jennifer), his 7 grandchildren, Ashley Hegler (Chris), Dan Martin (Shannon), Kara Martin, Mary Beth Patterson (Rob), Natalie Castelan (Andrew), Melanie Russell (Jonathan) and Rylee Martin. Not only was Mr. Martin proud of his children and grandchildren, but he had 10 great grandchildren who he was proud of and will share his legacy; Ethan, Emma, Eli, Audrey, Lorelei, Harrison, Knox, James, Michael, and Ruth. Hubert is also survived by his “bonus Love” Sheila Kruse. Over the past 8 years, Hubert and Sheila were loving companions, sharing meals, traveling together and enjoying the ups and downs of life.
A family memorial service will be planned in the spring. Memorial donations made be made in Mr. Martin’s honor to two of his favorite charities, First Presbyterian Church Gainesville, GA designated to the Missions Committee and the Georgia Mountain Food Bank.
