OBITUARY
James Joseph Quigley
6 October, 1926 – 19 November, 2020
Calabash, NC
James J. Quigley, Sr., 94, of Calabash, NC, surrounded by his family, peacefully passed away on November 19, 2020.
He was born on October 6, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY. He is predeceased by his loving wife Bette as well as his infant son Thomas Patrick.
After serving in the Navy during WWII, Jim then began a career in the New York City Department of Corrections. He retired as a Captain after 25 years. Jim was a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW and a member of the Elks Lodge.
In 1949, Jim married the love of his life, Bette McGann. They shared their lives together inseparably for 68 years, sharing a love that is seldom seen until Bette’s passing in 2017. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as a proud patriot to the country he served and loved. Jim, also lovingly known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren, was loved and respected. His sense of humor and practical jokes was entertainment for all.
Jim was a devout Catholic and an active parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary, Brooklyn, NY, Our Lady of Victory, Floral Park, NY and Our Lady Star of the Sea. Jim, this gentle, loving, caring, and humble man, has left a permanent mark etched in our hearts and will be sorely missed by so many.
Jim is survived by his sister, Agnes (Honey) LoPiccolo; six children; Maureen (Dan) Edwards; Eileen (Tom) Ruane; James Jr., Susan (Rick) Walsh; Betty (Joe) Quigley; Christine (John) Halk; a loving daughter in-law, Kathy Quigley; 19 grandchildren; Danny and Kathryn Edwards; Erin, Thomas; Conor, Kevin and Brian Ruane; Kelly Anne (Dennis) McWilliams; Colleen (Scott) Morgan; James (Nicole) Quigley, III; Rob (Allison) Walsh; Meghan (Eddie) Parenteau; Tommy and Brian Bremer; Nicole (Mike) Harris; Katlin (Kris) Petric; Amanda (Bryce) Burkey; Lauren (Chris) Yoder; John Halk, III and Emily Halk; fifteen great grandchildren; Molly, Seamus and Teagan McWilliams; Brody, Payton and Delaney Morgan; Gianna, Alyssa and Joseph Walsh; Declan, Madeline and Reagan Quigley; Connor, Landon and soon to be born Baby Parenteau.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Lady Star of the Sea, North Myrtle Beach, SC, the American Legion Post 503, VFW Post 7288 and the Elks Lodge 2679 of Calabash, NC.

Nancy and I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Quigley family. Our families share wonderful memories of times together in Long Island, Beach Lake, and barbecues in your parents’ backyard. The friendship that our parents shared was special and rare. The Quigley family will always have a place in our special memories.

We feel truly blessed to have know Jim and consider ourselves lucky to have shared the dance floor with him, visited the Elks and VFW with him, and to have waived a flag or two as we cheered he and Betty along in a few parades. Jim was genuine person, a true gentleman, and a celebrated member of the greatest generation. We are sending love to all the members of his lovely family, you are all certainly a testimony to his life well lived.
With Love, Bobby and Cindy Matthews

We met Bette and Jim ten years ago when we had first moved to Calabash- at the Elks of course! That same night we met they invited us to join the Elks Kazoo band. Then they invited us to join them at Elks dinner dances and then on cruises. We always said yes! We have loved them both since that first night, such great examples of love, faith and patriotism.
As much as we will continue to love and miss them we are happy that they are together again with Christ.

My husband, Phil, and I had the pleasure of living next door to Bette and Jim for nearly 10 years in Carolina Shores. Jim and Bette both were always upbeat. We could have not asked for better neighbors. Rosemary

Christine, John and family,
I’m so sorry for your loss. I only met your dad a few times, but I feel like I know him from your stories, pictures and posts. Through them you shared a fun, loving man who enjoyed life. What a wonderful legacy your dad is leaving to his family and friends. He will live on in your hearts and in your traditions.
I wish you peace and comfort during this difficult time.
With sympathy and love,
Kathy
