It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James “Alix” Smith on August 18, 2025, at the age of 34. He was a beloved son, grandson, brother, uncle, friend, and devoted member of his church and community. He enriched countless lives through his uplifting spirit, warmth, and unwavering kindness.
He was a friend to everyone and a stranger to no one.
Known for his contagious smile, big heart, and helping hands, Alix never hesitated to support anyone in need—whether it was a neighbor, a friend, or someone he had just met. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome and cared for, and his laughter, compassion, and gentle spirit will be missed more than words can express.
Outside of his love for others, the outdoors was his happy place. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and target practice. More recently, he could be found taking walks on the beach with his dog, Chappy. He was a faithful member of Living Water Baptist Church, and a member of Future Farmers of America and the National Rifle Association.
Alix cherished his family most of all, and not a day went by that he did not reach out to his parents or brother. His parents were not only his greatest supporters but also his best friends. Their bond was built on love, loyalty, and a lifetime of memories that will be treasured forever.
Alix was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Charles Burris and Russell Smith. He is survived by his parents, Russ and Susan Smith; brother and sister-in-law, Ryan and Courtney Smith; grandmothers, Elinor Smith and Mazie Burris; nephews, Cooper and Logan Smith; niece, Bristol Smith; and his dog, Chappy—in addition to many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who feel as close as family.
Alix was scheduled to be released from MUSC and sent home on August 18, 2025—and that is exactly where he went. Home. He is now free from disabilities and is walking the streets of gold in Heaven. He is the picture of perfect health and is sitting at the right hand of Jesus. Though his body has left this earth, the light he shared with others will continue to shine in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
A visitation for Alix will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Living Water Baptist Church, 1569 Hwy 9 E, Longs, SC 29568, followed by a memorial service at 12:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Living Water Baptist Church’s building or missions fund, in honor of James “Alix” Smith’s legacy of service and love
