Kay lived close by, and  she walked her dog, Maddie, over into Foxfire, my neighborhood.  A couple years ago I began seeing small piles of hard cat food in my driveway. I own two cats, liddabit, and papa, strays I had adopted and made legal. Of course the food was attracting black ants. So I left a cat food bowl with a note inside thanking mystery person, asking them to put food into bowl.  That’s the way I met ms Kay. Our friendship grew with our love of animals, not only with me but with other neighborhood  animal lovers. Sometimes she would be so tired, didn’t feel well, however, she realized her exercise was so important that she allowed Maddie to lead her. My dog Danielle and the cats would wait for her. She always had a greeting, a smile and a petting for the animals. Gradually our talks became more thoughtful. She talked about her heart, about her family, deaths in the family.  About her near death experiences, she spoke and said that if she had another she wanted to please go on.  She shared about her love of Jim Quick and Coastline Band. Then she told me about the upcoming surgery, she was ready to have it over. She made it through the surgery, all the way back home.  Then I would say she had her third experience with death. This time she took hold of the angel’s hand that comes to guide you home, and she flew away!  I am so grateful I was allowed to be her friend for awhile. She is free like a bird. Soar high, ms Kay.  Danielle,  the kitties and I love you. There will never be another hungry animal in heaven. And all the angels are singing Jim Quick!!  Love

I probably knew Kay longer than anyone. I knew her before she was Kay Howard, she was dating Terry Howard, my best friend, that was  62 years ago. The best thing I can say about Kay was, my mother told me long ago, when you get married, I hoped you can find someone as nice as Kay Howard, tried but never did.
 Thanks for the memories my friend, promise I will never forget you.


Mama Kay, you will be forever missed. You made everyone that met you feel so special and loved. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for opening your home to me, for hugging my neck when I needed it most! You were a single mom, struggling to make your way with a son and daughter, but you always found room to love another. For this, and so much more I’m forever grateful.

Kay was always that second mom. She was always interested in our young lives , our comings and going’s. My fondest memories of Kay were at the apartments at Barrington Dr where we all hung out and I met my first and only true love Dale. Kay was the fun mom the hip mom. She always welcomed us with open arms. Kim and Roger were very lucky to have her as their mom. She will always be the neighborhood mom. Rest In Peace Kay.
