Myra Hill Langley, an incredible mother and wife, passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2022 after a short but valiant fight against cancer. She was born in Thomasville, NC on June 1, 1952 and graduated from East Davidson High School in 1970. She attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and loved every minute of life at Carolina. On July 20, 1974, Myra married her soul mate and life partner, Jerry Way Langley. They moved to Charlotte, NC in 1975 and enjoyed 43 years of a tremendously rich life filled with many incredible friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Four years ago, she and Jerry moved to North Myrtle Beach, SC and she was never happier; the beach was her happy place.
Myra’s greatest joys in life were her children and family, Carolina basketball, mother-daughter adventures with Hillary, and her accomplished career as a teacher. In 1975, she began her teaching career at Independence High School in Mint Hill, NC where she taught English and served as the yearbook advisor. She took some time off to raise her young kids but was called back to education as an elementary school Gifted and Talented teacher in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. She became a Board Certified teacher, earned a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and was named the North Carolina Gifted and Talented Teacher of the Year in 2008. She made a true impact on the lives of thousands of children.
Myra is survived by her loving husband, Jerry; her son, Ryan; daughter, Hillary (Caleb Gunter); and her beautiful granddaughters, Arya and Caylee Gunter. She is also survived by her brother, Steve Hill (Becky); her niece, Kristin (Vince) Reese (Shields and Kate Fletcher); nephew, Jonathan Hill (Nevaeh); and many other beloved family members. She is preceded in death by her father, John Buren Hill; and her mother, Frances Everhart Hill. We are heartbroken she is gone, but are so very thankful for the time we got with her on this side of heaven. She was bright, funny, full of life, and a ray of light for so many. She will be greatly missed.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1:00pm on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at McEwen Funeral Home – Mint Hill Chapel at 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Charlotte, NC. A gathering of family and friends will immediately follow the service.
