Reba F. Avant

Reba Flowers Avant passed away peacefully at home leaving a legacy of love and unmistakable grace for those who knew her. A devoted matriarch, she profoundly shaped the lives of so many through her song, her laughter, and her consideration of others.

Born September 26, 1932, in Clayton, North Carolina, to Clara Mae Wells and Vaden Flowers, She was a graduate of Campbell University (BA). She worked for Bonitz Insulation Company in Columbia, South Carolina for 46 years and was active in National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). She shared 47 years of marriage with Louis R. (Ray) Avant of Georgetown, SC, who preceded her in death. They lived in Columbia, South Carolina, their entire married life and were lifelong active members of Asbury United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Roy Parker, Herman Parker, S.G. Flowers; sisters, Catherine Elhard, Clairine Layburn, Mary McCarthy and Reba Ruth Gordon. She is survived by her daughters, Dianne Rutledge (Steve) of Calabash, NC, Beth White (Larry) of Ocean Isle, NC, and her son Louis R, Avant Jr. of Columbia. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Jayme Meetze (Amanda), Blair Meetze (Vicki), Rae Banks (Brad), Morgan Kruse (Ben) and Tyler Rutledge. She is also survived by a host of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. They would say that there was nothing better than going to “Grams and Grampy’s house”.

Reba loved to travel with her sisters and best friends. She was very active. She enjoyed knitting, she loved to sing, and play canasta with her friends at River Park Senior Living.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date both in Columbia, South Carolina and also at River Park Senior Living in Little River, South Carolina. Reba was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend to her many friends. She will be missed but has left her mark forever in our hearts.
