Richard Dale Freeland passed away Friday, November 17, 2023, at his home in Longs, SC. Son of Marcus and Esther Freeland, Richard was one of nine children: Vivian, Jane, Mervin, Violet, Marcella, Gloria, Everett, and Elizabeth, who died in infancy. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sandra, daughters Bethany Freeland of Ypsilanti, MI, and Paige Freeland, Northville, MI; and granddaughter, Lauren Ephriam of Seattle, WA. He is also survived by his sister, Jane Hill of Bremerton, WA. He was 83 years old.
Richard managed a grain elevator in Reynolds, ND, building the business from a 300,000 bushels/year grain business to a full service and multi-faceted cooperative that handled grain buying and selling, drying, and storage; he added fertilizer sales and acquired a hardware business. By the time he left, he had added the capability of filling unit trains and was processing more than a million bushels per year. In 2000, he opted for sunshine and golfing in Longs, SC. He enjoyed the friendship of many, both in the Red River Valley and his new South Carolina home.
He once confessed with a smile he believed he could do just about anything better than anyone else. He was tough, passionate, funny, and smart. Richard was a loving husband and father, and the rock of his family. He was unafraid to give an honest opinion: you always knew where he stood and could count on his word.
