

Richard "Dick" Garrard Shearer, age 86, of Calabash, NC, the much loved spouse of Evelyn Ann Matesic Shearer, died at home on January 15 after a very brief battle with liver cancer. He was born on October 26, 1937, in Wilkinsburg, PA. He is predeceased by his parents Merle and Gertrude Shearer and younger brother Thomas Shearer. He was the loving father of Amy Upton -Three Rivers, TX, Richard T. Shearer -Pittsburgh, PA, David Shearer (Ervin) - San Antonio, TX, and Matthew Shearer (Tracy) - Calabash, NC. He was also the beloved step-father of Nikki Foster (Mike) - Virginia Beach, VA, John Milan (Ali) - Chapel Hill, NC, and Frana Milan (Aaron) - Seattle, WA. He leaves behind seven precious granddaughters and one dear grandson and six great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother, Dr. David Shearer - Portland, OR, and cousin Charles Mullin (Melody) - North Myrtle Beach, SC, and niece, Lisa Cooper (David) - Traverse City, MI, and nephews, Scott Shearer (Mary Beth Pala) - Los Altos, CA and Robert Mullin (Brooke) - Pittsburgh, PA.
Richard worked for AT&T for more than 30 years. After he retired, he worked for the Westerville, Ohio school district, where he also coached softball and golf. Richard was known for his uncanny ability to repair anything, complete a crossword puzzle in pen, identify the make, model and year of antique cars from 50 feet away, and cook delicious meals. He could often be seen cruising on one of his Harley-Davidsons or cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He will be greatly missed by all who knew this gregarious man with an amazing memory and a huge caring and loving heart. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Hope Harbor Home in Brunswick County, NC.
