Robert Watkins, 76, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025, just two days shy of his 77th birthday, with his brother and sister-in-law by his side. Born in Plainfield, NJ on February 5, 1948, Robert was a son of the late Frank and Marie Norberg Watkins.
Following high school, Robert’s desire was to join the US Army, but due to health reasons, he was unable. However, his unwavering love of the United States remained throughout his life. Robert lived with his parents in Plainfield until their passing. Having not traveled far out of Plainfield, following their death, his brother and sister-in-law, John and Mary Lou moved to South Carolina and Robert joined them. The three began traveling and it didn’t take long for him to find joy being on-the- go, and time spent with them was well enjoyed.
A devout Catholic, Robert was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He had the honor and privilege of meeting both Mother Teresa as well as Pope John Paul II, which he treasured immensely.
Robert was a true fan of Elvis Presley and had a voice that would turn heads thinking Elvis was in the building! Just a few weeks before his passing, he was singing “Blue Christmas” to a Hospice nurse.
Robert was an avid walker, and he enjoyed daily strolls to see the turtles in the neighborhood pond, where he would feed them. Bowling was a pastime that he shared with his dear friend, Chrissy Bryck, although his favorite part was visiting the snack bar and eating ice cream.
Surviving are his siblings, John Watkins (Mary Lou), Ellen Sciaraffa and Linda Watkins.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Lee Funeral Home and Crematory, 11840 Highway 90, Little River, SC 29566.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
