Vance was born September 30, 1946 to Pete and Laura Abbott. The renowned outdoorsman, flirt, cook, and Marine was preceded in death by his parents, brother John Ray Abbott, and sister Betty Richardson. Vance is survived by his children Matthew Abbott and Brandi Abbott Thompson (Timothy), along with 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 2 siblings and an immeasurable amount of friends who are considered the closest of family, including the entire Skipper clan and his “adopted” son, Sam Seddinger (Hilary).
Vance was one of the last of a dying breed. The saying “They just don’t make them like they used to.” fits him to a tee. An avid huntsman, fisherman, farmer, and all around man’s man, you could find him most times in his yard or more likely, the woods. It was his creed that the closest you came to God was in his majesty: nature. If he wasn’t out and about in the great outdoors then he was helping his family, friends, and neighbors with any project that could be cooked up.
Never letting circumstances slow him down or get in his way, Vance continued that way of life even after his terminal diagnosis. When asked how he was doing, he’d without fail respond, “Well, better than I deserve.” Kind, gracious, and caring with a sense of humor that would have knocked you off your feet. In the same breath, he was also a mule. Staunch in his convictions and fiercely educated, he would tell you exactly what he thought on just about anything. These qualities are those inherited from his parents and then further fostered by his brave service in the Marine Corp’s 26th Marines, 3rd battalion in Vietnam followed by a healthy career as a businessman.
All of these things are the legacy he left us: love nature, love your people, show gratitude, show integrity, and most importantly, live fully. We could all benefit from living a little more like Vance.
Per Vance’s specific instructions, there will be no ‘fussy’ funeral. Instead the family invites those who wish to celebrate his life to join them on November 18th, 2023 from 3pm until 9pm at Brandi’s residence, 5115 Old Hwy 90 Conway, SC 29526.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made in Vance’s memory to either Battle Buddy 3Gun http://Www.battlebuddy3gun.org online (bottom of the page, button that says ‘donate’, will then take you to PayPal) or the Catch a Dream Foundation online at https://www.catchadream.org/inmemory/.
