A Newark, N.J. native, Haig served during WWII from 1941-1946 as 1st Lt. in the Army, Engineering Corp. Stationed in France, Haig made maps under Generals Eisenhower and Patton. After the war he was very involved in Veteran Affairs and served as Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #10416 in East Hanover.
Haig dedicated over 50 years to Barton Press in Newark and West Orange as a successful lithographer. He devoted nearly 30 years to the Livingston Recreation. Haig spent over 60 years officiating numerous sports including high school, college and recreational basketball, softball and track. He continued to officiate basketball in to his 80’s and umpired softball well into his mid 90’s umpiring his last game at the age of 95. Haig officially retired when he was 96. Haig has received numerous awards and accolades for his dedication to sports officiation. One of his highest honors was being inducted as a member of the Softball Hall of Fame.
Haig was an active member in his church, St. Mary’s Armenian Church in Livingston, N.J. and was very proud of his Armenian Heritage. He served on their parish council, was a past President of their YPA, and ran numerous fund raising activities.
Haig devoted family man who married his wife, Phyllis (d. 1998), in 1954. Together, they resided in Newark until 1960 when they moved to West Orange, N.J. where he lived until 2016, at which time he moved to Bridgewater, N.J.
He is survived by his son Greg (Sue) and daughter Barbara (Bobby), his granddaughter Jennifer (Dan), two grandsons Gregory and Dan, step grandchildren Ian and Reilly and great granddaughter Stella.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 2, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston, N.J. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 3, at St. Mary Armenian Church, 200 W. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston. Interment will follow at Restland Memorial Park, East Hanover, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations in Haig's name may be made to the St. Mary Armenian Church Endowment Fund.
