Avis Singleton, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, peacefully passed away on March 11 2017. She was born on July 22, 1928 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Victor and Opal Christiansen. Her grandparents immigrated from Norway in 1893, making her a second generation immigrant. During the Great Depression, Avis and her family sold everything they owned (including her favorite doll and book) and moved to Denver to explore greater opportunities. Avis graduated from Englewood High School in 1946. On September 10, 1954, Avis married her “sweetheart,” LeRoy Singleton. They raised their three children, Jackie, Theresa and Richard in Littleton. Avis was a full time mother and homemaker who enriched their family with character and love.
Avis filled her free time by working at the phone company, sugar beet factory and occasionally a department store. She also enjoyed volunteering at the local schools as well as with the Girl Scouts program. Later in life, she was a member of the Elk’s Lodge and Moose Lodge.
Avis and Lee moved to Longmont in 1970 when Lee’s career brought him to the Fort St. Vrain Nuclear Plant. Twenty years later, they retired in Sun City West, Arizona; it was here, that they enjoyed traveling, golf and the endless sunshine. Avis returned to Colorado in 2015 where she spent time with her family.
Avis is preceded in death by her parents Victor and Opal, sister Dorothy, husband Lee, son Richard and Daughter Jackie.
Avis is survived by her daughter Theresa White, grandchildren Jennifer Selby, Sarah Van Nort-Hamilton, Benjamin Van Nort, Jason Volz, Alisa Strousberg and Calah Volz. Great-grandchildren: Hunter, Brookelyn, Isabellah, Tassiana, Caiden, Taryn, Jamesen, Ellie and Mason. As well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and reception will be held on April 6, 11:00 am at Howe Mortuary in Longmont.
