Barbara Mae Lewis, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on September 20, 2021, with her children by her side. She was born on July 13, 1926, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, to Don and Marcina Allen.
Barbara graduated from Dahlgren High School in 1944. She married Staff Sgt. Leroy Bernard Lewis (deceased) on April 9, 1946, in McLeansboro, Illinois. They moved to Longmont, Colorado, in January, 1950. Shortly after making their home in Longmont, they became members of the First Methodist Church. Barbara remained an active member of the Heart of Longmont United Methodist Church until her death. She always volunteered and donated hand-crafted goods for the annual Christmas Holiday Fair. She was honored in 2010 to receive recognition from United Methodist Women, as a valued member of the Elizabeth Circle.
Barbara’s husband Bernard was a long-time residential contractor in Longmont. Barbara was an integral partner in the Lewis Construction business, helping with interior trim and painting, while the children played outside.
In 1971, Barbara was trained and employed as a hair stylist. She also maintained a custom-sewing and alterations business in her home. In 1982, she and Bernard started a machine-quilting business from their home. Barbara continued the business through Bernard’s declining health and death in 2004.
Barbara is survived by her daughter Sandra and husband Larry, son Donald and wife Cindy, son Patrick, 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald Allen; husband, Bernard Lewis; and daughter, Sharon Davidsen.
A private graveside service will be held at Foothills Gardens of Memory at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Heart of Longmont United Methodist Church, to support the Miracle Stained Glass Window fund.
