Betsy Brownell Fehsenfeld, of Boulder, passed away on the 5th of September 2025 at the age of 91. She was born on 16 April 1934, in Coral Gables, Florida, to parents Thomas Church Brownell (U.S. Navy Captain) and Florence Margaret Muser Brownell.
Betsy is survived by her second husband of 55 years, Fredrick C Fehsenfeld, 3 biological children from her first marriage, Christopher Bakwin, Elizabeth Bakwin Eason, and Peter S Bakwin, 2 step children, Evan Fehsenfeld and Orin Lewis, and by too many grandchildren and great grandchildren to count.
Betsy had diverse interests during her long life. As well as raising her children, she worked in archeology, as a French language teacher, and as a social worker, helping to find work for people with disabilities. She enjoyed hiking, camping, skiing, tennis, snorkeling, and a particularly “wild” kind of gardening: any plant was welcome in her garden. Betsy loved being outdoors, and with her husband continued to walk over a mile every day until the very end of her life. Betsy preferred a quiet, low-tech kind of life: she never found reason to use a cell phone or the Internet. She took joy in her family, and all animals. She is dearly missed.
A memorial will be held for close family on the 19th of September 2025, in Boulder.
Cremation is entrusted to Howe Mortuary of Longmont, Colorado.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.howemortuary.com for her loving family.
