Billy Lester Spaur

Billy Lester Spaur of Longmont, CO died June 21, 2008 at Longmont United Hospital. He was 80.Billy was born October 14, 1927 in Palisade, Nebraska to Lloyd C. and Mable Mae (Beck) Spaur. He grew up in Lyons where he graduated from high school. billy served in the United States Navy and Marine Corps for 20 years. In the service, Billy was a medic and was a combat veteran of the Korean War.Billy married Audrey Annette Shearer on June 11, 1949 in Reno, Nevada. The couple has lived in Longmont since 1965. Billy worked for a couple years for Beechcraft and was involved with the Apollo Space Program and the oxygen tanks used in the spacecraft. He then went to work for the United States Postal service and retired after 16 years. During his retirement, Billy drove a bus for the school district for five years and delivered meals for the Meals on Wheels program in Longmont.Billy and Audrey enjoyed traveling after his retirement. He also enjoyed fishing and going to the mountains to enjoy the scenery and wildlife and was a skilled craftsman carving birds out of wood. He enjoyed spending time at the Longmont Senior Center where he would play pool and play cards. He was a member of the VFW, Tin Can Sailors, Fleet Reserve Association and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association.Mr. Spaur was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Leonard and Slick Spaur, a sister, Laura Brown and a granddaughter, Kaimana Detamore.Billy is survived by his wife Audrey; a son, Rickey Spaur of Fort Collins, CO; a daughter, Lorna Detamore and her husband Steve of Nappanee, Indiana; a brother Glen Spaur and his wife Lois of Denver, CO; two sisters: Louise Teegarden of Boulder, CO and Irene Gaines of Lafayette, CO; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.Billy requested that no services be held. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services.Memorials may be given to the Longmont Meals on Wheels, Inc., 910 Longs Peak Ave.,Longmont, CO. 80501.
