Brian Rafferty, a dedicated plant engineer and lifelong Coloradan, passed away in January 2026 at the age of 62. Born in Denver in October 1963 to Lloyd and Mary Lou Rafferty (originally of Fargo, ND), Brian was a man whose technical brilliance was matched only by his quiet loyalty to those he loved.
Brian graduated from Northglenn High School and possessed a natural aptitude for the mechanical world. He earned an advanced certificate from the American Institute of Baking, along with numerous other specialized certifications. As a highly skilled plant engineer and machinist, Brian was essential to the food industry, known for his ability to keep complex heavy machinery running perfectly. He was a master of his craft, taking great pride in designing and machining custom parts to solve intricate mechanical problems.
On May 15, 1997, Brian married Patty (Stengel) Rafferty in Monett, Missouri. For nearly 29 years, he was a loving husband and a foundational member of his family. He took great joy in his role as a stepfather to Jason (Cole) Stengel and his wife, Ali, and was a proud grandfather to Emma, Ally, Luke Stengel, and Grant McCoy. Brian was also a devoted companion to his sweet dog, Minnie, affectionately known as "Sugar Snuffy."
Brian often maintained a rough exterior, but those who knew him well recognized his "hidden heart of gold." He was a man of his word—a loyal employee, a supportive family member, and a steadfast friend.
Outside of his professional life, Brian found peace in the Colorado outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and appreciated spending time in the mountains. He also enjoyed reloading ammunition for shooting. Brian could almost always be found in his garage or shop, tinkering on projects and immersing himself in history.
Brian is survived by his beloved wife, Patty; his stepson, Jason (Ali) Stengel; his four grandchildren; his sisters, Erin (Reed) Rafferty and Shannon (Jeff) Satur; and his niece and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Mary Lou, and brothers, Kevin and Patrick.
His expertise, reliability, and unique spirit will be deeply missed by his family, his colleagues, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
A Celebration of Brian's Life will be held on Monday, March 2nd, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman Street, Longmont, CO. A reception will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Brian’s memory to an organization of your choice.
