Carol Ann (Marshall) Smith died peacefully in her sleep on September 30, 2014 at her home in Longmont. She was born March 25, 1946 to Mary Pauline (Paula) Patterson and Fred Farmer Marshall in Denver.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Jock Lyle Marshall.
After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1964, she married James D. Smith in 1965, and had two daughters, Tracy Elizabeth and Katie Rebecca. She is grandmother of Micah Alexander Jones and Elinor Danae Jones, both of Fort Collins. She is an exceptional mother and her spirit will continue to guide these children.
Carol was passionate about many things. She was especially interested in birds, both local and exotic. She never traveled far without her binoculars and bird books. She also was devoted to her many pets, and went out of her way to help any pet in need.
Carol so loved animals, her own and others’, that she started a pet sitting business in Longmont. This was her favorite job.
Carol also was passionate about books and writing. She appreciated and read widely in many genres including poetry, fiction, mystery, and non-fiction. She enjoyed volunteering with Friends of the Longmont Library. Over the years, Carol lent and gave away scores of books. She read with an open mind and heart, and offered sincere and intelligent insights about everything she read.
Carol had a talent and a love for gardening and landscaping. She always made a home from the outside in, creating amazing landscapes and habitat for the wild creatures she loved.
Carol was an entirely loyal and true friend, who treasured her deep relationships. It was friendship that drew her to England for a very special trip in 2011.
She is survived by daughters Tracy Smith of Fort Collins and Katie Smith (Mark Niemiec) of Longmont, brother David Marshall (Janet Fogarty) of Littleton, nephews Eric Marshall (Lora Skein) and Brian Marshall (Heather), of Denver, and her beloved grandchildren Micah and Elinor. She is also survived by her dogs Dylan and Rufus.
A celebration of her life and spirit will be planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to:
