Christopher Allen Schmad, 53 passed on April 1, 2021 due to organ failure and sepsis, at University Hospital in Denver, Colorado. Chris was born on July 4, 1967 in San Diego County California to parents Wayne and Kathy Schmad and was brother to Bob and Annalisa. In his early childhood, Chris was very active and enjoyed all sports, especially football and skiing. He traveled around the country with his family and in 1979 they moved to Longmont, Colorado.
In the summer of 1983, Chris met his future wife, Kim at a baseball game and they dated throughout high school. They married in the summer of 1988, welcomed their first child, Megan in February of 1998, and their son Ryan in March of 2000. He was a devoted husband and father. Chris was very family-orientated and was involved in his children’s extracurriculars as both a coach and mentor. In his free time, he enjoyed camping trips, water sports, and playing volleyball with friends and family. He loved watching movies, game nights and barbeques. You could always find him with a can of Mountain Dew and a bag of Twizzlers.
Chris graduated from Longmont High School in 1985 and attended the Colorado Institute of Art that fall. After a year of attendance, Chris enlisted into the army and later received a medical honorable discharge. Chris realized he had a passion for serving the community and criminal justice and enrolled in the police program at AIMS Community College. His first employer out of the academy was with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Department as a correctional officer (1989-1991), followed by a 30-year career with the Longmont Police Department. Chris was a Master Police Officer (1991-2007) where he served in the Patrol and Detective divisions and was selected into the SWAT Team where he served as a scout sniper. During this time, he was also a firearms instructor for the department and OpTac International. Chris served as Sergeant from 2007-2013 and was accepted into the FBI National Academy in 2011 in the class of FBINA 244. From 2013 to present, Chris was a Commander and oversaw both the Patrol and Special Operations Divisions. He was a part of establishing the Longmont shooting range for private and public use. He was greatly involved in the community, participating in Shop with a Cop and the Homecoming program for Meals on Wheels. Throughout his career, Chris received several merits and letters of commendation, including Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Medal.
In 2010, Chris was diagnosed with P.S.C., a rare liver disease, and underwent a liver transplant in 2012, his brother served as a live donor. He never let his health keep him from doing things he enjoyed and he lived life to the fullest.
He is survived by his loving wife Kimberly and children Megan and Ryan (Kate) Schmad along with his parents Wayne and Kathy Schmad, brother Bob (Lesa) Schmad, sister Annalisa (Frank) Schmad, niece Danielle (Kelby) Hahn, nephews Gavin Schmad, Brandon Sheffler, brother-in-law Lance (Sandra) Sheffler and parent-in-laws Kathy (Rick) Haskell and Glenn Sheffler, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
