Emily Mae Meier

Emily was born in Allentown, PA on October 23, 1932 to Helen (Anderson) and Frank Startzell. She had one brother and one sister. She grew up in eastern and central Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, and graduated from West Hazelton High School. On February 11, 1956, Emily married the love of her life, Harold “Hal” Meier, in Washington, DC. Hal and Emily welcomed two sons and two daughters into the world and were happily married until the time of his passing in 1983.

Emily began working in Washington, DC after being recruited by the newly formed National Security Agency (NSA). She left her position at the NSA after marrying Hal in 1956. The Meier family relocated to Longmont in 1970, moving from Desoto, TX. Emily loved her family and her friends. She was a long-time member of New Creation Church, Longmont Foursquare Church, and in her later years was a member of White Fields Church in Longmont.

Emily was a masterful homemaker, cook, baker, and hostess. She opened her doors to many, sheltering them from life’s storms. She was an artist, a mom, a grandmother, aunt, friend, and great-grandmother. She was loved and she will be missed.

Emily was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Helen Startzell, her husband, Hal Meier, brother, Frank Startzell, Jr., and by her sister, Dorothy Grafinger. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy and is survived by her children, Melissa (Mike) Lyons, Keith (Sally) Meier, Gary (Pam) Meier, and Jennifer Baker; grandchildren, Rob Stuart, Amanda Stuart, Christina (Ivan) Hirsh, Adam (Samantha) Meier, Stephanie Meier, Lauren (Sam) Khan, Megan Meier, Brandon Baker, Wesley (Krystal) Baker, and Levi Baker; great-grandchildren, Dylan Delfosse, Natalie Delfosse, Mason Hirsh, Jeremiah Hirsh, Nicholas Hirsh, and Irene Meier; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Emily was laid to rest with her husband, Hal, in a Private Family Graveside Service on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery. A Celebration of Life was held after at Flatirons Community Church in Longmont, followed by an Ice Cream Social featuring Emily’s favorite ice cream from Baskin Robbins. Emily's family extends their deepest gratitude to all those that were able to attend and celebrate Emily together, to those who sent flowers or contributions, and those that otherwise shared their love and support.
