Gary Lynn Abbuhl

14 June, 194318 September, 2021

Gary Abbuhl was born on June 14, 1943 and grew up on a farm near Palisade, a small town in western Nebraska. Before his senior year in high school, his family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where he graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School. He graduated with a degree in Accounting from the University of Nebraska, and became a practicing CPA. He married Lois Young in 1964. In addition to his wife Lois, their family includes two children: Tim Abbuhl, married to Amber, and their daughters Madeline and Claire of Simsbury, Connecticut, and Amy Abbuhl Schenke and her husband Ken and their son Jacob of Lees Summit, Missouri. Gary is also survived by his brother Lee Abbuhl of Hastings, Nebraska and his sister Patricia O'Connor of Clearwater, Florida.

Through the years he worked for Arthur Andersen in Omaha, Dillon Companies in Hutchinson, Kansas, and A.G. Edwards in Longmont. For over 40 years and continuing to the present day, he dedicated his life to his successful private CPA practice-for 24 years in Hutchinson and now in Longmont, Colorado.

He and his wife Lois were drawn to their beloved Colorado mountains in 1999, and together they enjoyed all the hiking trails and beautiful mountain scenery, and Gary specially loved to be out on his bicycle-many years logging 10,000-12,000 miles and biking many of the highest mountain passes. He was out on his newest recumbent cycle on a beautiful Saturday, morning when he was fatally injured when struck by a car. He died doing one of his favorite activities.

He was well known and respected for his many community activities including being a Treasurer for Rotary, Treasurer for his HOA, and serving in many capacities at his church, including being a Trustee and a member of the Chancel Choir.

A Memorial service will be held at Grace Commons Church (formerly First Pres), 1820 15th Street in Boulder, CO on Friday, September 24 at 11:00 a.m.

Lois and family,

I was saddened to hear about Gary. He was so kind and was a very genuine person that I really enjoyed talking too. I remember coming for piano lessons with the girls and Gary was either returning or leaving on his bike. He did really enjoy all that he did, you could see it and hear it in his conversations. Please know we are thinking of you and sending prayers.

So sorry for your loss. Even though we haven't seen Gary for a long time, I always kept in touch during tax season. He did our taxes way back when he was in Lyons, Kansas and we kept with him when the family moved to Colorado. We hope you find comfort in your family and friends.

Lois, I was so sorry to hear about Gary’s passing. Although it’s been many years since I worked with Gary at AG Edwards, and since you gave Lydia piano lessons, I remember Gary as a very pleasant, calm person. My heart goes out to you at this time. Our deepest sympathies to you & your family.
