Helen Deloraine (Cate) Corl passed away peacefully at the age of 93 at her home in Longmont, Colorado. She was born in Pontiac, Michigan, on October 29, 1932, one of four children born to Howard and Janet (“Del”) Cate. Helen graduated from Pontiac Central High School in the class of 1950. She graduated with a B.S. in
Elementary Education from Eastern Michigan University in 1954. In 1952, Helen met Richard (“Dick”) Corl, who was to be the love of her life and husband of 61 years. Helen taught 5th grade in Pontiac, MI, for three years, temporarily retired for 18 years to raise a family, then re-entered the workforce in 1975 before she & Dick finally retired in 1987.
In 1988, Helen & Dick moved to Fort Collins, CO, where they lived until Dick passed away in 2016 at the age of 84. Helen was active in a variety of clubs and community organizations, as well as her church. She loved music, reading, gardening, playing games, camping, baseball games, traveling, and – most of all – spending time with her family. She was the proud mom of two dogs, Beauly and Bentley, whom she adored.
Helen is survived by all three of her children: Mary Ann (Corl) Ryan (John), Richard Corl Jr. (Lori), and John Corl (Cindy); eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, Janet Deloraine (Mackay) Cate and Howard Leavitt Cate, and three brothers: Howard Leavitt Cate III (Patricia, currently residing in Williamston, Michigan), Thomas Joseph Cate (Patricia, currently residing in Grand Rapids, Michigan), and David John Cate.
Helen was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and she will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 21 at 2:00pm at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Longmont. Memorial contributions can be made to Christ United Methodist Church in Fort Collins, CO, or the Longmont Humane Society.
