Joan V Spangler (Rice)

Jony was born on February 13, 1935 in Greeley to William D. Rice and Jean Cook Rice. She graduated from Greeley High School in 1953, and attended Colorado State College in Greeley. She was an active member of the Intl. Order of the Rainbow for Girls, loved horses, played the violin, and occasionally helped out at the Rice’s honey warehouse as a young girl.

Joan married Harvey Bender on November 15, 1954 in Greeley. They moved to Longmont in 1957, where she made her home for the next 58 years.

Joan married Richard W. Spangler on April 19, 1969 in Longmont. They spent many weekends at the Ferncliff cabins and later their condominium in Estes Park. She enjoyed entertaining and her home was open at all times, including their pool all summer. Raising her children and following her grandchildren’s sports exploits and school endeavors were her greatest joy.

Joan was active in helping the First Congregational Church start and grow the Longmont Christmas Home Tour. She was on the decorating committee and volunteered her home on four separate occasions. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter M; and her beloved bridge club.

Preceding her in death are her parents; and both of her husband’s.

Surviving are her brother James Rice of Greeley; sister Nancy Sherrill of Byers; her daughters Cathy Mally of Longmont; Susan (George) Richart of Centennial; Anne Ewing of Longmont; and Stephanie (David) Juarez of Timnath; a son Scott (Rhonda) Spangler of Raymond; 12 grandchildren Chad Craig of Alpine, Tennessee; Derek (Lacey) Mally of Johnstown; Brooke Mally of Longmont; Ryland and Joseph Richart of Centennial; Haley Juarez of Mead; Alex, Peyton, and Gunnar Juarez of Timnath; Tyler and MacKenzie Ewing of Longmont; and Cole Jolin of California; she is also survived by five great grandchildren Jacob, Zak, Jayden, Gage, and Kendyl.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 1 from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm at the Howe Mortuary in Longmont.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel. Interment will follow at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
