She was born November 26, 1932 in Del Norte, Colorado to Alfred and Virginia Speiser. She grew up with one brother, Dr. Theodore (Ted) Speiser. Her family moved to Ft. Collins where she attended Colorado A & M (now Colorado State University). She majored in Business and loved to dance, meeting her husband JL Hooper, Major Ret. (preceded her in death in 2021) at one of his Alpha Gamma Rho dances. They were married August 10, 1952.
Married life with a military officer gave her the opportunity to travel the world, which she loved. She loved her four children very much: Lance J. Hooper, Jaleen K. Hooper, Vince L. Hooper and Deanna Jill Hafner. Her strength and courage raising four small children far away from home, sometimes alone, was truly admired.
Retired from military life, they settled in Longmont, CO and spent winters in Arizona and continued to travel nationally. Joann loved to entertain and was a wonderful hostess! She was a very active member of Central Presbyterian Church in Longmont for 50 years, and a strong believer in Jesus Christ. She was often quick to offer prayers of support, as well as her time, energy and resources when seeing someone in need. She served on the Board of Christian Women's Club. Her caring nature was also seen while serving as a Board Member of Meals on Wheels. She helped start the Our Center in Longmont in its early years. She had a passion for writing, having articles published and also serving as president of the Longmont Writers Club.
Joann is survived by a son Lance Hooper (Barbara) of Leadville, CO, a daughter Jaleen Hooper of Longmont, CO, a son, Vince Hooper (Mary) of Steamboat, CO and a daughter Jill Hafner (Mike) of Loveland, CO four grandchildren, Jennifer Hooper of Boulder, CO, Kyle Blekicki of Breckenridge, CO, Sam Hafner (Sarah) of Loveland, CO and Tara Hafner (Chris) of Windsor, CO three great-grand daughters, Leah Hooper Janson, Kaja Janson, and Sloane Hafner.
Fiercely devoted to her family, she was kind, had great empathy for others, and had a fun sense of humor. She will be dearly missed! The family is hosting a Memorial for her at Central Presbyterian Church, Longmont, CO on September 6, 2025 starting at 11:00 am.
