

John Dennis Hickey of Johnstown died at his home on February 9, 2009. He was 75. John was born on February 18, 1933 in Escanaba, Michigan to Harold J. and Iris B. (Ogle) Hickey. The Hickey family moved to Boulder in 1942 where John would attend school and graduate from Boulder High in 1950. He entered the United States Army and served from 1950 through 1954 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. John married Joan L. Crum on December 31, 1955 in Colorado Springs. John attended the University of Colorado studying accounting and earned his Bachelor's Degree. Mr. Hickey was part owner of Boulder Denver Truck line in Boulder for fifteen years followed by starting and opening The Fig Leaf, a clothing store on the ""hill"". He then became a manager for City Storage & Transfer until he retired. After retirement, he dabbled in various other business hobbies, always looking for ways that he would be able to meet and talk with people. John was a member of Jay Cee's and the Boulder Elks Lodge. He enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, golfing, playing poker, and woodworking. Always the people person, John enjoyed his friends and especially helping in the raising of his grandchildren. Preceding Mr. Hickey in death were his parents, two brothers: Michael and Daniel Hickey and a grandson, Thomas Vickery. John is survived by his wife, Joan; his son, John Hickey and his wife, Susan of Mead; three grandchildren: Jessica, Lisa and her fiancé, Mike Nekvasil, and Jake and his wife, Jamie; and four great grandchildren: Chandler, Jermain, Oceana, and Jordan. He will be missed by a host of friends. Visitation will be held at Howe Mortuary in Longmont from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 14 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 1335 Francis Street, in Longmont with Pastor Paul Rhode officiating. Cremation will follow the service.
