Martin was born in New Jersey to Thomas and Lois Sharps. Though he was born on the east coast and spent some years in British Colombia, he always considered himself a Coloradoan. He graduated from Niwot High School and went on to earn a Bachelor’s of Science in Geophysical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. During his college years, he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Martin was a proud alumni and donated to his college every year for the past 20 years.
Martin married Karenina Hunt when he was 25 years old. Together they brought into the world two wonderful children, Daniel and Arianna. Martin and Karenina were married for 15 years, until the time of her passing. He found love again and was married to Hue Ngo for 18 years, until the time of his own passing. Hue and her daughter, Uyen, joined the Sharps family during a difficult time, having just lost their wife and mother. Together, the two families combined to make one, each helping the other heal from their own past struggles. Hue and Martin welcomed a son, Ryan. The family formed a very strong bond with one another, despite different pasts.
Martin was very passionate about his work and always called himself a scientist. With his degree he pursued a 37 year career as a Geophysicist in the Gas & Oil Industry for Union Oil, Unocal and Chevron Oil. His first overseas job was exploring the Colombian oil fields while sleeping in a tent. Karenina (his late wife) thought he was Indiana Jones. He then had the opportunity to live overseas in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Angola. In 2019, he returned to Niwot, CO to retire and live near the Rocky Mountains, where he was raised.
Martin had a passion for traveling around the world and for geology. He traveled to every continent around the world. He was a Colorado man and loved all things outdoors in the Rockies including fishing, camping, and hunting. Martin, his brother, Brad, and their father spent a lot of time hunting and fishing together throughout the years. He also loved scuba diving, skiing, and looking at vintage cars. He made lots of friends overseas through work and kept in touch with his close friends from college. He and his best friend, Hank, always kept in touch and would go fishing and enjoy barbeques together during the summers. Martin had a great sense of humor. He used to say, “The older I get, the better I was” and believed that “Old guys rule”. He loved meeting new people and was never shy about speaking up; he never did meet a stranger.
More than anything else in the world, Martin loved his family. He worked very hard to take care of and provide for them. He will be dearly missed.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents, and by his first wife, Karenina. He is survived by his wife, Hue, children, Daniel, Arianna, Uyen, and Ryan, brother, Brad, and sister, Dianna.
