Mary E. Ely

Mary Elizabeth Ely (Melisse) passed away Sunday December 14, 2014 one day short of celebrating her 98th birthday. She was born December 15, 1916 in Yorba Linda, CA to John and Maud Quigley. She married Walter Kenneth Ely on September 5, 1937 and they enjoyed 60 years together before Walter's death in 1998.Mary is survived by six of her seven children: Mary Kay Hoagland, John Everett Ely, Frederic Humphrey Ely, Walter Kenneth Ely II, Charles Michael Ely and Russell Graham Ely. Margaret Anne Smith, her second daughter, preceded her in death.Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.Mary was a longtime resident of San Diego, CA where she raised her seven children. She was very active in her community as PTA president, Cub Scout leader and made political runs for City Council. She loved her church, singing in the choir and cultivating her roses.Mary was the nucleus of the extended family and kept everyone in touch via Ely Central. Although she is mourned by so many, her family is thankful for her long life and happy she has peacefully gone to her rest.A private celebration of Mary's life will be held by the family.
