Myrt was born on January 17, 1924 to parents Ole and Olga Hauglund in Alberta, Minnesota. After graduating high school as salutatorian in 1943, she traveled by bus for three days to find a job at a Shell Casing plant in Los Angeles, California. She met her husband, Morris, during a wedding where they stood as best man and bride’s maid. Four months later, they married on November 1, 1945, and had three children, Moreen, Dane and Kevin.
Morris started a drywall business while Myrt dedicated her life to raising their children and maintain their home. They move several times throughout the states including Arizona and Colorado before finally settling in Longmont, Colorado in 1963.
No matter where they were living, Myrt made sure the house felt like home. She painted, landscaped, sewed everything from curtains to clothing and was a fantastic cook and baker. Her passions included knitting, crocheting, gardening, ironing, taking long walks and navigating drives through the mountains or during long trips throughout the country.
She enjoyed listening to baseball games on the radio, could talk sports with anyone about the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings, taught her grandkids how to play Yahtzee and any card game, and finished the New York Times crossword puzzle each morning. She was delighted to be part of her grandchildren's and great grandchildren's lives and welcomed their visits. When her grandchildren gathered each summer, she would always have a pan of the best homemade cinnamon rolls waiting for them on the counter.
Myrt’s most amazing gift was her memory. Despite other physical challenges towards the latter part of her almost 100 years on earth, she could recall names, dates, events and experiences from any point in her life. Her family often sought out information from her as she could recall events in their lives as well.
Myrt was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Morris E. Wimer, four brothers and one sister.
Myrt is survived by her sister, Esther Pederson of Morris, Minnesota and three children, Moreen Wimer, Dane Wimer and daughter-in-law Mitzi and Kevin Wimer; four grandchildren, Dana Stinson, Amber Wyatt, Scott Wimer and Marie Soard; five great-grandchildren, Nicolas and Kristopher Stinson, Tate and Maeve Wyatt and Bennett Soard; and several nieces and nephews.
A private family service is planned for later the year. Myrt will be interred at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver next to her beloved husband, Morris, who passed away in 2008.
