I was born in Grand Junction, CO on Monday, June 27th, 1932, being number 3 of 4 living children born to Walter Clyde and Rosalie Virginia Deckert Beckley.
My siblings were sister Margaret Jane Beckley, Brothers James Clyde Beckley, and John Joseph Beckley.
June 19, 1934 at the age of 35, my mother Rosalie, died of breast cancer. Joe was 5 months, I was almost 2, Jim was 7, and Margaret was 14.
I attended St. Joseph Catholic School from first through eighth grade and Grand Junction High School my Freshman Year.
July 20, 1947 my dad Walter Clyde Beckley married Verna Read Dexter at which time we moved to Fruitvale, CO. I enrolled as a Sophomore in Central High School where I met my future husband, John (Jack) Ellsworth Weaver.
Throughout High School, I was a member of several musical groups, singing solos, a member of the chorus and accompanist for music groups and for solo instrumental students performing for Music Contests.
Upon graduation from Central in 1950, I spent my Freshman year at Mesa Jr. College in Grand Junction and received a Scholarship to Sherwood Music School in Chicago. I attended Sherwood and DePaul University in 1951-1952. In the Fall of 1952, I transferred to the University of Northern CO in Greeley, CO, and graduated in March 1955 with a Major in Elementary Music and Minor in Business.
My first teaching contract began immediately upon graduation in Encino, NM where I taught music for first grade through High School and High School P.E. This assignment ended in May and upon my return to Grand Junction I married my high school sweetheart, John (Jack) Weaver on May 28, 1955, at the Clifton Methodist Church.
In 1955, I taught 7th grade music at the local Jr. High while Jack attended Mesa Jr. College. At the end of that year we moved to Boulder, CO where Jack enrolled in CO University receiving a double degree in Electrical Engineering and Business while I taught 3rd and 4th grades in Broomfield, CO. During our time in Boulder, Virginia May (Ginger) and later Vanette Lee were born. Our next moves were to Cortez, CO, Farmington, NM, where Andrew Clyde (Andy) was born. Our next move was to Buena Park, CA, then to El Paso, TX, teaching 3rd grade for one year, and playing the piano for church while Jack was the choir director. In 1963, we moved to Pueblo, CO where I taught 3rd grade in Avondale, CO until 1968. Our last out of state move was to Santa Clara, CA. While in Pueblo, I became a Charter member of the Sweet Adeline’s Chorus.
June 5, 1970, found us in Longmont, CO. In the fall of 1971, I began teaching 5th grade at Niwot Elementary, and transferred my membership to Sweet Adeline’s Loveland Chapter, Centennial Blend.
During my tenure at Niwot, I was instrumental in raising money for Children’s Hospital in honor of Channel 4 newsman Ed Greene, who was sponsoring fund raising for Children’s Hospital in support of his premature daughter. With the help of car washes, popcorn sales for after school movies, bake sales, and my famous fudge; parents, teachers, and the students were successful in raising $18,130 over a ten-year period for Children’s Hospital. The final $4,400, May 15, 1995, was designed for a Dynamap Blood Pressure machine. Visitors are encouraged to take a look a the “Tree of Life” hanging in the hall at Children’s Hospital which holds a leaf commemorating the Niwot Fifth Grade students and teachers. I was also honored by Children’s Hospital with a limited edition painting for my efforts.
June 1995, following the completion of this project, I ended my 35 year career of teaching to be with my husband.
On June 8, 1997, Jack and I renewed our marriage vows at St. John’s Catholic Church and in 1998 Jack and I set up the Beckley-Weaver Scholarship at Mesa State College in Grand Junction for Central High School graduates, which now operates in perpetuity.
March 3, 2005, I was installed in the Longs Peak Chapter of NSDAR where I was Chairman of the Wilma Dunn Scholarship Essay Contest from 2009-2014. I also served as Scholarship Chairperson for the St. Vrain Valley Retired Employees Association during this time.
After seeing the movie “The Sting” I became fascinated with learning to play Scott Joplin’s music; thus, my preference for his compositions at my Memorial Service. May 28, 2015, Jack and I celebrated our 60th Wedding Anniversary.
Preceding me in death are my husband, John(Jack), infant daughter Vanette Lee, brothers Dr. James (Jim) Beckley, John Joseph (Joe) Beckley, and sister Margaret Beckley Hutchinson.
