In 1969, Bob joined the United States Navy and turned 21 while in boot camp. He served four years and was discharged on July 12, 1973. After his military service, Bob built a long and respected career at IBM, where he worked from 1977 to 2013 as a systems programmer.
Bob married Patricia Sorensen in 1974, together they had 1 child, Jennifer in 1978. They later divorced in 1982.
