Valerie J. Decker

13 November, 1953 – 22 March, 2026
IN THE CARE OF

Howe Mortuary & Crematory

Valerie J. Decker, 72, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026, at home, surrounded by her loving family, following an extended illness. She was born on November 13, 1953, in Kearney, Nebraska, to R. Keith and Dorothy Stephens, the eldest of six children.

Valerie graduated from Elm Creek High School in 1972. On November 9, 1974, she married John Decker, at the Methodist Church in Elm Creek, Nebraska. Together they raised three children. With a lifelong commitment to learning, Valerie earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wyoming in 1990, a proud achievement she carried throughout her career.

Valerie built a fulfilling career rooted in dedication and hard work, spending a decade with the State of Wyoming before relocating to Colorado, where she continued her professional journey with IBM for 18 years.

Above all, Valerie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She found joy in the kitchen, where her cooking was legendary among family and friends, and in her many creative pursuits — sewing and crocheting with skill and patience. She had a spirit for adventure that few could match: she loved to ride motorcycles, whether cruising alongside John or commanding her own Harley-Davidson with confidence and flair. In her 40s and 50s, country dancing filled her evenings, and the open road often led her to campgrounds and quiet fishing spots she treasured.

Valerie is survived by her beloved husband, John; her children Robert (Amber) Decker, Sally (Ben) Swift, and Sarah (Adam) Still; and her 11 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. She is also survived by her siblings Dan (Loretta) Stephens, Mark (Wendy) Stephens, Sandra (Dave) Calvin, Sam Stephens, and Sue (Jorge) Diaz-Dulanto, as well as numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.

Valerie was preceded in death by her parents, R. Keith and Dorothy Stephens; her sister-in-law Michelle Stephens; and her brother-in-law Michael Albrecht.

No celebrations or services are planned, at this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations to a charitable organization of your choice in Valerie's name. Those who wish, may also contribute to the family, who will gather donations and direct them to a cause close to her heart at a later time.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
