Bill was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 11, 1965, to Dottie and Michael Mansfield. He was raised in New London, Connecticut. He graduated from St. Joseph’s School, class of 1979, and St. Bernard’s High School, class of 1983. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the crew team while attending WPI with many fond memories.
Bill was an amazing son, father, husband, brother and friend. He lived a life full of generosity and had a passion for learning. He had a keen sense of mind and could debate any side of an argument. If you knew Bill, you undoubtedly learned a lot from him. As a teenager, Bill enjoyed many happy summers sailing and working at the Thames Yacht Club in New London. He was passionate about his multiple hobbies, which included numerous travel adventures in the sprinter van that he designed and built out, ice and rock climbing, biking, hiking, model trains and planes, playing guitar, golf, hunting, and fishing. He successfully completed many bike races including the Leadville Trail 100 (3 times), the LoToJa Cycling Race, and countless other cycling races. He enjoyed studying history and playing euchre and cribbage. Bill had a warm sense of humor with just the right amount of sarcasm mixed in.
Bill lived a life of success but was always humble in the work that he did as an electrical engineer. He recently retired from Emerson in Boulder, Colorado, after 29 years of service. He earned 27 US patents and was awarded Emerson’s Prolific Inventor Award. Bill would love to share his day with Lisa and she would often have to tell him to bring it down to her level, which he patiently would do. He served as a Volunteer Firefighter for the Mountain View Fire Department earning many honors and recently served as the Membership Coordinator for the Boulder Aeromodeling Society. Prior to working for Emerson, he worked for Analog Devices in Massachusetts.
Bill is survived by his wife Lisa, with whom he shared 14 years of marriage; daughter Hillary Culbertson (Jamie); stepson Collin Duffy (Lauren); mother Dottie Mansfield; brothers Steve Mansfield (Zeke) and Dave Mansfield (Deb); niece Emily Mansfield; and nephews Jake and Nate Mansfield. Bill was preceded in death by his father, Michael Mansfield; former wife, Jodie Mansfield; and multiple fur babies.
