William D. Sarchet was born on November 6, 1934 to Melvel (Mel) Sarchet and Bernice (Drummond) Sarchet. Except for his time spent in the army, Bill lived his entire life on a farm Northwest of Hudson, Colorado: first on his parents’ ranch and then on his own farm that was a quarter mile away.
Bill attended Keenesburg Elementary and Keenesburg High School. During their senior year of high school, Bill began dating Carol. A few months later, he asked her to marry him on the bus ride home from a basketball game. They were married on August 14, 1953.
Bill graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Vocational Agriculture in May 1956 from Colorado A & M, now called Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He completed his Army basic training in the ROTC throughout college. After basic training, Bill was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas for basic officer’s training during the Korean War. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and was ordered to report to the Hanford Atomic Energy Plant in Richland, Washington. While stationed in Washington, their son, Jim was born in 1957.
After Bill’s discharge from the army, he fed cattle, farmed, worked for his father-in-law at an alfalfa mill, and worked for his father leveling land for nine years. This allowed him to secure a loan to purchase the farm they had been leasing since 1960. While on the farm, their daughter, Janice was born in 1960.
In 1968, Bill worked as a substitute teacher. He loved teaching and decided to go back to college, and he completed his master’s degree in 1970. Bill worked for School District 27J in Brighton as a teacher at South Elementary and as a principal at South and Henderson Elementary Schools from 1970 to 1995. After retiring, he taught part-time for several years.
In 1995, Bill and Carol (with the help of many relatives) built a four-bedroom cabin in Drake, Colorado. This fulfilled a dream to own a house in the mountains. The grandkids enjoyed Grandpa’s homemade sourdough pancakes for breakfast, playing pool, family board games, sledding, and fishing at the lake near the cabin.
All of Bill’s adult life was focused on his Christian faith and a belief that all things should be to God’s will and glory!
Bill died peacefully on Thursday, December 30, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Carol, and his son and daughter: Jim (Karla) Sarchet, and Janice (Mark) Brisnehan, along with 7 grandchildren: Jene’, Greg, and Derek (Hyojin) Sarchet and Jeff (Alison), Adam (Jared), Bradley (Emily), and Alex (Devin) Brisnehan and 8 great-grandchildren: Jacob, Noah, Anabelle, Margot, Norah, Emmy, and Cole Brisnehan and Jiyu Sarchet. Bill’s sister, Jean, preceded him in death and he is survived by his brother, Fred.
