Daniel J. Long, 62, passed away peacefully December 7, 2025, surrounded by his family. Dan was born May 27, 1963, to the late James B and Mary Rose Long. He was the last of three children born 12 years after his sister and 15 years after his brother. He was a kind and loving child, full of mischief. He almost immediately followed his father with his passion for rabbit hunting and raising and training beagles.
After high school, Dan went to work for The Courier-Journal where he spent over 35 years as a circulation manager. During this time, Dan suffered a ruptured disc that sent him to the hospital, where he became paralyzed on the way to surgery.
Being in a wheelchair did not stop or slow Dan down. He continued his career; he lived his best life. He traveled to Ireland and continued to hunt and fish. Dan was featured in an article in the Courier-Journal for bagging a buck from the ramp of his van. That buck is still hanging on the wall. After retirement, Dan started making and selling custom leather pieces, wallets, bracelets, almost anything anyone wanted. He set up shop in his garage and sold them at the White Elephant. He also discovered and became almost obsessed with vintage and antique clocks.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother, Steve Long and brother-in-law, Tom Johnson.
He leaves an empty space in the hearts of his family; his sister, Yvonne Johnson, significant other, Angela Keene: her children, Connor and Logan; his niece, Wendy Johnson (Bob Mills); nephew, TJ Johnson (Becky); and a long list of friends and extended family.
Dan’s funeral service will be Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 10am at the Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Highway, with interment following in Bethany Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2pm until 8pm on Friday.
