Sol C. Simpson, Jr., 94, passed away peacefully with his wife and children by his side on May 12, 2022. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 25 years, Wilma Jean (Johnson); his parents, Sol C. Simpson, Sr. and Katie Ellen (Lee); his siblings, Burton Simpson, America Simpson Howard, Robert Simpson, Julia Simpson Jump, Bill Lee Simpson, and Geneva Ellen Simpson. Sol was a member of the American Legion and Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels as well as a charter member of New Bethel Assembly of God Church. He was an avid gardener and loved to travel throughout the United States, especially the Western region. Sol had a strong sense of duty and deep commitment to his family. All who knew him recognized his grace and humor in times of adversity and love of lifelong learning. He never failed to encourage and support people to become their best. Sol retired as a Sergeant Major from the U.S. Army having served from 1945 – 1968. He was on active duty during three conflicts: World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. After leaving the military he became Property Administrator at the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant. He is survived by his wife, Linda Simpson; children, Charles Simpson (Micki Worley), Phyllis Sherard (Bob), Mary Louise Barry, Lori Dabney (Gordon), Vincent Havens (Quentin Cox), Nathan Havens (Shannon); brother, Thomas Simpson; mother-in-law, Doris June Loveless; grandchildren, Rob Sherard (Shelbie), Samantha Dabney Blair (Joel), Page Dabney, Abby, Xander and Jude Havens, Chris Barry, Hunter and Jonas Cox, and great-granddaughter, Loralai Sherard. The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 16 at 1:00 p.m. at the Advantage Funeral Home – Hardy Chapel, with burial following in Bethany Memorial Cemetery. Visitation begins at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dare to Care Food Bank or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
