I was so sorry to hear of your loss. No words can reach thru the pain right now, but soon you'll realize that he's so much more comfortable now, and in a far better place.

The last time I saw Uncle Dewey was Thanksgiving 2010. I bent over and hugged him and he immediately said, "I know who that is, that's Paulette. See, I can remember some things." I was so surprised and felt so honored that he did remember me. Especially since I haven't been able to come around as much as I would like to for the last 20 years. He was always so sweet to me when we would come home with Dad and Mom. I remember he would hold my little 4 year old hand and walk me around his garden and tell me what was growing.
I know you girls will miss him terribly. He was loved by so many. I wish I could get away and be there but I can't leave Rich here by himself with all these tax appointments. My heart will be with you and my prayers will be many. Big hugs to all.

When I graduated from high school, in May of 1945, Dewey was stationed at Pyote Air Base in far West Texas. Louise was with him. She had a job on base. She and I talked Mama and Papa into letting me go out there to visit. Louise thought I might be able to get a job in the building she worked in and I would live with them. Since I was only 16 at the time, Mama did not think I would be hired, so she agreed. I got a job so I stayed.
While discussing the things I could and could not do while living with them, Dewey said, "I only have one rule. You can not date a guy who outranks me, because if he did not act right, I would not be able to knock his block off."
Dewey was a Staff Sargent at the time. He never had to knock a guys block off.

I remember once while working at the papermill (I had a summer job) he playfully kicked one of the large metal smoking booths (very heavy) that were situated between the paper machines. I was sitting in it (and I seem to remember Andy being there with me, though I can't remember why he would have been.)  Anyhow, he moved that heavy booth, along with both of us, several feet along the floor. Sure got my attention! That one is kind of a hazy memory. More current is a memory of a discussion we had only a couple of years ago about how when he was a young man (early teens) he would cut and split wood...cords and cords of wood. Very hard work that he took pride in. I guess both of these memories point to the fact that he was a large powerful man...but easy-going and pleasant to be around. I am grateful for the little I was able to do for him.

Uncle Dewey was a big strong man that was very intimidating to a child, but before you could really build up fear about him, he would open his mouth and out would come something that made you feel good. Dewey Burrous was certainly a man among men, but had a heart of gold. He was firm but always loving and fun to be around.

When Jerry and I first started dating, we had a family gathering at MaMa's & Pawpaw's. The men were all outside visiting around Uncle Ralph's rig and the women were all in the house. When we started home, Jerry started talking about how Uncle Dewey could flip a sledge hammer. I had no idea what he was talking about. It seems that you lay down on the ground with your arm extended holding the very end of a 12# sledge hammer and you try to flip the head of it side to side. Evidently, lots of the younger guys tried and failed when Uncle Dewey said he wanted to go at it. Jerry said he could flip that sledge hammer like wind shield wipers....We all knew how strong Uncle Dewey was but that day in the eyes of all those men standing around there he confirmed it. As for Jerry, he always said Uncle Dewey was probably the stongest man he knew.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during your time of sorrow. Dewey was a good man, kind hearted and soft spoken. I will never forget the house fire and the time he caught me as I fainted. We still laugh about it. May God give you all confort, knowing he is in a better place. We love you.

I cant express how sorry Pete and I are to hear of Dewey's death.He was a fine man.I know he will be missed greatly.

My sincerest condolences on the loss of a fine man and a great dad. Thinking of Mr. Burrous makes me smile.  I have so many wonderful memories of time spent at his house from 2nd grade on. I don't know how he put up with us, but he did. Riding horses (the famous Midnight & the clothesline incident!), slumber parties, talking on the phone, in and out of the house (letting out the cool air!), making noise while he was sleeping...my goodness, we pushed the limit and he sure was patient with us. How blessed we all were to have had him in our lives!

Dewey Burrous was a fine Christian man.  He raised a good family with the help of a good wife.  He projected a strength and bearing that was indicative of his physical stature and moral convictions.  I was and am proud to call him my uncle.
