

Services for Mattie Imogene Kennedy Stewart will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2015 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Harold Hancock officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Imogene was born June 28, 1923 in Bradley, Arkansas to the late J. P. and Katie (Bethany) Kennedy. She passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at her residence at Sunrise Assisted Living of Cinco Ranch in Katy, Texas with her family by her side.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Boyd Leland Stewart; and her brother, Johnny Kennedy of Bradley, Arkansas.
She is survived by her sons, Boyd Leland Stewart, II and his friend Nancy Harmon of Dallas and Kim Stephen Stewart and wife Alice of Katy; grandchildren, Samantha Stewart Scheiner and husband Jon of Houston, Christopher Stephen Stewart and wife Amy of Dallas, and Kevin Michael Stewart of Austin; great-grandchildren, Evelyn Rose and Eleanor Posey Stewart of Dallas; sister, Merna Bethany of Stamps, Arkansas; and sister-in-law, Donna Stewart of DeSmet, South Dakota.
Imogene married her “Honey”, Boyd, on February 17, 1943 and they were residents of Lufkin for 60 years. She was known for her love of cooking and could feed anyone at a moments’ notice. Her skill in the kitchen took her to a career in school food services. Her skill in the kitchen took her to a career in school food services. She began working in the Slack Elementary School cafeteria in 1964, working her way up to the Director of School Food Services for Lufkin ISD until her retirement in 1988. Imogene was a storybook grandmother to her three grandchildren: warm, loving and always ready with a plate of her one-of-a-kind chocolate chip cookies or a Werther’s Original from her purse.
Imogene was very active in many organizations, including: Altrusa Club, Lufkin Ambassadors, Lufkin Citizen’s Police Academy, Texas State Retired Teachers Association and the Texas School Food Service Association where she earned the inaugural “Ozzie” award at the first annual TSFSA Wizard Awards in 1985 for excellence in School Food Service.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Stewart, Kevin Stewart, John Adams, Tim Beamon, Joe Penn and Leon Manning.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
