Edward “Skip” L. Mageary, age 89, of Lynn, passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. He was the beloved husband of Arlene M. (Connolly) Mageary, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. A lifelong Lynn resident and born in Lynn on June 20, 1936, he was the son of the late Roy A. and Ella Mae (Lynch) Mageary Freeman, and graduated from Lynn English High School in 1954.
Skip served his country with honor in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Before retiring in 1999, he worked as a custodian for the Lynn Public Library and a Stereotyper for The Daily Item and Boston Herald, before dedicating 11 years to the City of Lynn Fire Department as an operator. He was also a former part-time employee of the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home.
In his free time, Skip was a coach and manager for the Wyoma Little League, Lynn Shore Little League, and East Lynn Little League, as well as a coach and former President of the East Lynn Pop Warner League. Skip was a legend in the youth sports community, but he was happiest on the diamond. He was a long-time and well-respected baseball umpire with the North Shore Baseball Umpires Association and served for many years as the District 16 Little League Administrator. Skip believed baseball was for everyone and had a special place in his heart for the Alice O’Neil Challenger Little League. In addition to his love of sports, Skip was a man of great faith and was a longtime communicant of St. Pius V Church.
Skip’s proudest accomplishments were always as a father and grandfather. He was the dedicated father of Retired Lynn Police Chief Michael A. Mageary and his wife Lisa of Lynn, Kristine A. Stranahan and her husband Stephen of Lynn, and of the late Patrick W. Mageary and his wife Kathryn of Lynn. He was the loving grandfather of Jennifer Mageary, Colin Mageary, Brendan Mageary, Kileigh Stranahan and Cassidy Stranahan, and leaves many nieces and nephews.
Skip’s visitation will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn.
