SWAMPSCOTT - George William Baker, age 91, of Swampscott and Florida walked out of this life on Sunday, January 17, 2016. Born in Lynn to Bessie (Vasiliki Chrisospathis) and Bill (Vasilios) Baker, his parents of Greek heritage. George was raised in Lynn, Massachusetts and graduated from Lynn Classical High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater.
A traditional man with traditional values, he managed to evolve with the times. Always curious, he approached life with an open mind and vibrant energy, even to his last day. The core of his heart was loyal, determined and dignified. If he gave you his word, it was good. He could be counted on.
He had a playful sense of humor and at the same time he was serious. He was a peace-maker and a fighter. A gentleman and a 'downtown guy'. Humble and bold at the same time; a paradox. His highest value was to his family, friends and community.
After the war, George attended Suffolk Law School for a time. This was probably at the behest of his mother, Bessie. It just wasn't for him. He needed to be free and moving. He decided to make a career in sales. George was blessed with a 'gift of gab' and a sense of having never met a stranger. He managed offices in Massachusetts and New Hampshire for the Electrolux Corporation.
In 1952, he married his childhood sweetheart, Virginia. Together, they began their life and family. They have three daughters, Karen, Kristine and Georgine. His girls know him as both a devoted father and friend. George is extremely proud of his grandson, Drew. He particularly loved traveling to Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont to see Drew at college in the fall. Drew graduated in 2012.
His favorite piece of advice after 91 years: "Let the cards fall where they may...then do the best with the hand you've been given. The Man upstairs gave you a good mind. Use it". This is how he lived his life, and he walked his talk.
George’s Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26th, at the CUFFE-McGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple St. LYNN. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Interment will follow at Swampscott Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, January 25th, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Instead of flowers, please do an act of kindness in his name. We invite you to join us in celebrating his life together.
