

It is with profound sadness that the family of Sonia Margarita Abrego announces her passing on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at the age of 71. Sonia was born in El Salvador to Lydia Juarez and Jorge Armando Padilla. At the age of fourteen, Sonia became the primary caretaker of her five younger siblings after her mother migrated to the US. Sonia was always an amazing big sister who knew how to balance being gentle and firm. She showered her siblings with love and kindness because for her, family was of the utmost importance. At the age of 18, she joined her mother in Boston and continued providing for her siblings who remained in El Salvador until they were all reunited in Boston. Sonia obtained a cosmetology license and eventually went on to work for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the Department of Transitional Assistance where she worked for over 40 years.
Sonia’s family meant the world to her. Her favorite pastime was having a cup of coffee with her sons every evening while watching a movie or a New England sports team play. She was the matriarch of her family. Throughout difficult times, she was the pillar that kept everything together. She was quiet and thoughtful, and always made sure to check in with her loved ones to make sure they were doing well. She took joy in seeing her family happy and healthy. She made her loved ones feel loved and protected. Her love shined through always. She will be missed immensely.
Sonia will be remembered by her husband, Agustin and her sons, Agustin Jr. and Cristian; her daughter-in-law Melissa; her mother, Lydia Juarez; her brothers, William, Ricardo, Nelson, and Oscar; her nieces and nephews, Cristina, William, Christopher, Sonia, Sarai, and Cristal; Her grandnieces and grandnephews, Charlie, William, Rebecca, Jayden, Adrian, Dyani and Tessa; her extended family members, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Francisca Juarez and Cristina Lainez Padilla, her father, Jorge Armando Padilla, and her sister, Dora Alicia Barragan.
Friends and family will gather to celebrate Sonia’s life Saturday, March 12, 2022 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St, Lynn. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.
