Doris was born on February 17, 1931 in Brewton, Alabama. Her parents, Henry and Annie (Crosby) Jernigan, were farmers raising corn, cotton, sugar cane and other crops. Doris was one of seven children; sisters Iva Lee Smith, Cora Lee Stalnaker, Voncile` Ellis and brothers Leon, Robert and Hubert Jernigan.
In 1947, Doris married Melvin Crutchfield. Melvin was in the US Army and served in World War II and the Korean War. After Melvin’s retirement from the Army, they moved to Pascagoula Mississippi where they raised two sons, Douglas and David. Melvin worked as a welder and Doris worked at a t-shirt manufacturing company. They were faithful members of the Pineview Baptist Church where Doris worked with children’s Sunday School.
In 1986, Doris and Melvin moved to Bothell, Washington to be close to their grandkids Nicky, Tyler and Mallory. There they attended First Baptist Church of Martha Lake where Doris and Melvin enjoyed the friendship of a multitude of church members and families. Doris was a florist at heart. Her neighbors always admired her flower gardens and the neatness of her house and yard. Doris and Melvin were married 57 years when Melvin passed away in 2004.
Doris was devoted to her (3) Grandchildren, (7) great-grandchildren (Amanda, Karli, Nevaeh, Noah, Caden, Elora and Faith) and (1) great-great grandchild (Esmè). She is also survived by her grand fur baby, Charlie the Chihuahua.
Arrangements are under the care of Purdy & Walters at Floral Hills in Lynnwood. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please plant your favorite flowers in remembrance of her.
We invite you to light a candle and share a story, favorite memory, or photo. Expressions of love and kind words mean a lot to those who are grieving. If you’re wondering what to say, write about their special qualities and what it was you valued most about them. Your words will be a gift of love your grieving friend or loved one will treasure.
