Glenda Marie Harrington entered the world May 20, 1958 at Northgate Hospital, next to Northgate Mall, in Seattle. She was the first child born to the proud parents Mr. and Mrs. Glenn and Ida Harrington. Glenda was the older voice of reason to her younger siblings, sister Rose and brother Jim who was the youngest. She is survived by her husband Larry Barker and step-daughter Carrie Ann Martin.
From her childhood home in Kenmore she would graduate from Inglemoor High School in 1976. Upon receiving her Associate degree in retail management from Shoreline Community College in 1978, Glenda then went to work for JC Penney at Northgate Mall. Upon graduation she purchased her condo in Lynnwood.
She grew up attending church at Kenmore Assembly. In 1976 she started attending Westgate Chapel and has been there ever since. That is where she met Larry Barker and subsequently married him at Westgate in Oct of 1984. Together they have always called Westgate their home.
Glenda really enjoyed life. Her favorite activities were snow skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking, and traveling. She loved to snow ski in a different state and Canada every winter. She also did a lot of winter hiking and cross country skiing. She attempted to climb Mt. Rainer twice but was blown off the mountain by stormy weather both times. For one year at the insistence of her husband she tried to get into dirt-bike motorcycling. Her husband finally figured out this was not her favorite thing and sold her bike.
She loved to cruise. After her diagnosis with cancer and in between chemo treatments, she visited Israel twice and did four cruises, Mediterranean, Panama Canal, British Virgin Islands, and Alaska.
She loved to cook. She really loved to plan and cook dinners for large groups. Having all her family, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins located in Seattle along with church groups at Westgate provided ample opportunity to do a lot of meals and deserts.
She was always involved in church activities, filling in with the church office, food bank, clothing bank, and Epic Times activity planning.
Her greatest joy and strength was her relationship with Jesus.
Words from her step-daughter
Your smile, your laugh, or hearing your voice in my head, the cadence with which you spoke, I hear you say my father's name and it makes me smile. The foundation you gave my father, the way you loved him....thank you for that! THANK YOU...for you. I know he wasn't ready to let you go, NONE of us were. A peace hangs over us in this time that feels slowed a lil, now that there is no more pain for you...only love. Love in all our hearts and our memories. With love we will remember you...
