SALEM - Andrew Robert Newcorn, 94, of Salem, passed away on July 19, 2021 at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. He was the beloved husband of the late Charlotte (McGarry) Newcorn with whom he shared 30 years of marriage. He was the loving and proud father of Claudia Newcorn and her husband, Patrick Walsh, of Modesto, California and Jodi Newcorn of Newton; and the former husband of the late Ruth (DuPlain) Newcorn.
Andrew was born in Antwerp, Belgium, the only son of Marc and Regina (Goldmunz) Neukorn. At age 13, Andrew’s family fled to the U.S. during the 1940 Nazi invasion of Belgium. He was raised and continued his education in New York City. Upon his graduation from High School in 1945, he was drafted and joined the World War II effort, serving in the U.S. Army as a member of the Airborne infantry, where he was naturalized as a U.S. Citizen. His commanding officers kept him stateside, choosing to take advantage of his organizational and logistical skills to improve the Army’s system of processing the thousands of homecoming soldiers from the European Theatre.
Taking advantage of the GI Bill, he earned a bachelor’s degree at NYU and continued on there to earn a master’s degree in international business administration. Andrew had a unique flair and proficiency for learning languages, and spoke French, German, Spanish and Italian fluently. He worked as a simultaneous French translator for the newly established United Nations after the war and was, in fact, the French translator on the radio broadcast announcing the U.N.’s formation to the world. This talent led to his working around the world – he was a “global citizen” long before the term existed.
He began his career at McCann Erickson as a global advertising account executive. As he worked his way up the ladder, his young family grew. They lived in Japan, where he worked on the Japanese roll out of Coca Cola, and continued on to other senior executive positions in the U.S., Germany, Mexico, Italy, and Belgium. Eventually, he settled back in the U.S. and entered a new career as a Medical and Scientific Executive Search consultant, retiring at age 82 in 2009.
Andrew can best be described as a true “Renaissance Man” with a wide variety of interests. Well-traveled and well-read, he was an eternally curious independent, innovative and deep thinker. He enjoyed reading European and American history. He was a world class figure skater in his youth, in training for the Olympics, and most certainly would have represented Belgium had it not been for the war. He was a true animal lover. As a young man, he owned a horse, often riding in Central Park. Over the decades he owned many dogs and raised canaries. He was an extremely talented artist, his drawings capable of leaping off the page in their realism, and he also possessed a gifted eye for photography.
Andrew was always open to learning something new and in his 80’s he joined the Explorers Lifelong Learning Institute in Salem as student and also served as a French Instructor. Andrew will be most remembered for his ability to make people smile, especially while enjoying his favorite activity, spending time with his daughters and friends and engaging in a lively conversation on any topic, often for hours and sometimes to the dismay of a few restaurants’ closing staff. His friends also report that his favorite topic of conversation was about his daughters’ accomplishments and events in their lives.
The family wishes to extend its sincere appreciation to all of Andrew’s many friends for their kindness and friendship to their father over the decades.
Memorial visiting hours will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 (Andrew’s 95th birthday) with a Memorial Celebration of his life to follow at 5:00 p.m. at Eustis & Cornell of Marblehead, 142 Elm Street.
